Sourdough Brownies

I made some sourdough brownies on the weekend.  This is another recipe that made it into the McBugbear Family Cookbook.  Now I'll admit that I may have made the culture a bit too active as the brownies were pretty light, but they turned out really moist.  I would also consider adding a bit more chocolate next time.

Sourdough Brownies

Ingredients

2-1/2 cup of granulated sugar
2 extra-large eggs
1-1/2 cup margarine
2 teaspoons of vanilla
2 cups of all purpose flour
2 cups of sourdough starter
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon of baking soda

Equipment

mixer
bowl
saucepan
silicon spatula
10x14 inch pan

Feed the starter the night before, you actually don't want it too active or you'll be making chocolate cake.  Bring the water to a boil and add the chocolate chips, stir well and add the baking soda.  The mixture will foam up, remove from heat and let return to room temperature.  Cream together the sugar, eggs, butter  and vanilla.  Add the chocolate mixture mix well.  Then sift together the flour and add to the bowl a bit at a time and alternating with the sourdough starter.  Spread into a buttered pan and let it rise for 30 minutes to an hour depending on how active your sourdough culture is.  Pre-heat the oven to 350 and bake for approximately 40 minutes.
